About IPL / PhotoFacial

If you are bothered by how your skin looks because of sun damage, fine lines, or dark spots, Renew Beauty Med Spa & Wellness Center can offer you a skin consultation at our Dallas or Frisco, TX offices to see if you could benefit from intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) with Cynosure® technology. An IPL photofacial is a treatment that rejuvenates the skin for adults with hyperpigmentation and wrinkle problems on their face and neck. IPL may not be an invasive procedure, but it can be very effective and produce amazing results. IPL sends intense wavelengths of light that warm the skin just enough to set off the natural regeneration process and boost collagen production. As the added nutrients take effect, you should see a healthier layer with a more even tone and decreased spots of pigmentation.

Ideal Candidates

An IPL photofacial works deep within the layers of your skin to treat many complexion blemishes (especially sun spots and brown lesions) with little or no recovery needed. Ideal candidates for an IPL photofacial at Renew Beauty Med Spa & Wellness Center may have several problems with their skin, including sun damage, rosacea, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), wrinkles, rough texture, large pores, flushing, freckles, age and sun spots, or spider veins. We will assess your skin to see if you are a candidate for an IPL photofacial during your private consultation.

Procedure Technique

A photofacial is completed inside our Dallas or Frisco, TX office in about 20 – 30 minutes in one of our minor procedures rooms if performed alone. To start the IPL facial, the technician will clean and dry the skin to be treated before covering your eyes with shields. The photofacial is administered using a handheld device that passes over the skin while emitting pulses of laser energy. While most patients will feel some discomfort during the photofacial, it is generally tolerable for the quick treatment time.

What to Expect

There is no recovery period associated with an IPL photofacial treatment, but you will leave your appointment with your skin a little red and swollen. This will go away on its own in about a day — it can be concealed with makeup if you want. Renew Beauty Med Spa & Wellness Center recommends patients use an ointment on the skin to decrease irritation and speed healing. It also helps to take an anti-inflammatory medication to help decrease swelling. After several days, the irregularities that rested under the skin will come to the surface and then begin to flake off. It's necessary to keep your skin protected from the sun at all times after an IPL photofacial treatment and to not pick at your skin while it heals. While you should see visible results after the first session, your skin will attain the best results after several photofacial sessions. We recommend approximately 3 – 6 treatments scheduled around once a month at Renew Beauty Med Spa & Wellness Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does IPL cost?
Every patient case is unique, which means the cost of IPL will be dependent on your unique condition. Renew Beauty Med Spa & Wellness Center offers monthly specials and accepts many forms of payment. During your initial visit, we can help estimate your cost and determine the number of treatments needed for optimal results.

How quick are the results from IPL?
Improvements can be seen after each treatment, but the best results can be seen a month after a full series of treatments is completed. It is common for patients to respond differently to each treatment session. Patients will see a gradual improvement of redness, blotchiness, sun spots, and age spots over time.

What are the possible side effects of IPL?
Most patients experience mild side effects, like temporary swelling, redness, crusting, bruising, or superficial blisters. These subside within a day or two after the procedure. Patients will not be sun sensitive, but they should keep in mind that excessive sun exposure will affect the results of the procedure. Patients should always wear sunscreen to protect their skin, and decrease the appearance of redness, brown spots, wrinkles, and skin cancer.

Do I need to prep for IPL?
Patients about to undergo an IPL laser treatment are usually asked to avoid self-tanners and excessive sun for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. You should discontinue the use of minocycline, tetracycline, doxycycline or Retin-A/Renova several days before each treatment and may be asked to take aspirin or ibuprofen a week before the procedure to help prevent bruising. You should also protect the treated areas with sunscreen between sessions.

Why so many sessions?
A full series of IPL Photo Rejuvenation sessions are required in order to provide gradual, natural-looking improvement with little to no risk of the patient’s safety. Multiple sessions also allow for longer-lasting results.
